Wicksteed Park Volunteers are Bringing the Roses Back!

Volunteers at Wicksteed Park get involved in all areas of the park from helping with repairs and upgrades, to conservations projects such as planting trees. Every volunteer who gives up their time to help maintain our beautiful park plays a huge role in keeping it looking as amazing as it does.

A recent project Wicksteed’s volunteers have taken on is the return of roses to our iconic rose garden which will see a new flower bed with roses and companion plants added to the already vibrant garden.

Our volunteers have recently visited Bosworths, a local garden centre, to help them prepare for all the hard work ahead of them. During their visit they learnt everything there is to know about how to care for the roses including planting, pruning, feeding and even how to spot diseases. Volunteers were also able to learn about the different varieties of roses and what their growing habits were with plenty of examples and practical demonstrations displayed.

The return of roses to the rose garden is part of the @Play Heritage Lottery funded project which has also seen other exciting projects and opportunities brought into the park. The @Play project also includes Crafternoon which offers weekly wellbeing craft sessions for adults every Thursday, Playground Innovation which will see new playground equipment designed by a child installed into the playground area, Young Curators which is a six-week programme teaching young people about our heritage and much more!

There are plenty of volunteering opportunities available at Wicksteed Park and we encourage any aged 16 or older to get involved! We also welcome younger volunteers supported and led through schools and community groups to get stuck in. There is no upper age limit, and we have plenty to do for all abilities
