Say hello to Terry and Taylor the tortoises!

Wicky’s Farmyard is home to many amazing animals such as barn owls, ferrets, pigs and more. One of the most unique animals that call the farmyard home are our two tortoises named Terry and Taylor.

Terry and Taylor are African spurred tortoises, also know as sulcata tortoises. This unique species of tortoise is the largest in Africa, the largest mainland tortoise and the third largest species in the world after the Galapagos and the Aldabra giant tortoises.

Sulcata tortoises are native to the Sahara Desert and sub-Saharan regions in Africa. This species has strong shells that help them regulate their body temperatures and protects their soft bodies underneath, as well as powerful legs and claws that allow them to dig burrows that act as shelters from predators and extreme weather. Sulcata tortoises can grow up to 30 inches long and reach a weight of over 100 pounds. They have an impressive lifespan of over 100 years so Terry and Taylor will be around to say hello to guests for many years to come!

Have you been to Wicky’s Farmyard to say hello to the majestic Taylor and Terry? The farm is open all year round except for a few select days during the Christmas period, so why not come along to say hello!
