There is a new addition at Wicky’s Farmyard: Budgies!
12 new budgies (budgerigars) have been introduced to Wicky’s Farmyard at Wicksteed Park. This species of beautiful birds originally come from Australia and are very interesting.
Here are some fun facts about our new budgies:
Did you know?
Budgies have around 3,000 feathers despite their small size, providing excellent insulation and enabling agile flight. They can also process visual information faster than humans, registering over 150 images per second.
Can they speak?
Yes – budgies are able to mimic human speech and sound. Depending on the individual bird and the amount of training they receive, budgies are capable of learning dozens of words in different languages.
Do they only communicate by sound?
Budgies do not only communicate via sound, they can also use body language to communicate between each other. The body language that they use can also indicate their moods. Budgies use head bobbing, feather positioning and eye pinning to communicate.
What do they eat?
Budgies enjoy a diet of seeds, fruits and vegetables.
Are they friendly?
Budgies have a very friendly nature – they are very friendly and talkative making them loved by many bird enthusiasts. They are also very social birds that thrive in the company of others.
How fast can budgies fly?
The fastest speed a budgie can fly at is 22 mph! However, they don’t always fly at their top speed. Budgies normally fly at around half of their fastest speed.
You can come visit the new budgies at Wicky’s Farmyard almost any day of the year with an individual ticket which are £3 per person per visit. It is also included in the wristbands. Children under 0.9m can enter the farm for free with a paying accompanying adult.
