WORLD PUDDLE JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE A BREXIT-FREE ZONE

he World Puddle Jumping Championships have been declared a “Brexit-free zone” after this year’s event coincided with the date Britain is due to leave the EU.
Organisers of the annual event, held at Wicksteed Park, Kettering, said they wanted competitors to be able to concentrate on splashing in muddy puddles away from the political mud-slinging.
The event is to be held on Wednesday October 30 – 24 hours before Brexit day – and organisers are preparing more puddles than ever before.
Children and adults will be able to take part from 10:30am to noon, with registration from 10am. Judges will be giving scores based on things such as the height of the jump, enthusiasm, distance of splash and stickability (the amount of mud which clings to each competitor).
Wicksteed Park Head of Sales and Marketing Rachel James said: “The World Puddle Jumping Championships is a great way to encourage people, and especially children, to get out into the fresh air and have some fun.
“The event is held on the last Wednesday in October every year but it just so happens that this year it has been decided that we are due to leave the EU the next day.
“It is the subject that is dominating the media and everyone’s thoughts and we just wanted to give people a chance to get away from all of that and just have some fun, so any reference to Brexit is banned.

“Having said that, if anyone is feeling stressed by the whole Brexit situation, then jumping in puddles is a great way to relieve tension.
“There has been plenty of political mud-slinging over the last few years but the only mud at this event will be the mud splattered into the air by our competitors.”
Wicksteed Park is was founded by Charles Wicksteed, the inventor of the modern day slide and swing, to encourage families to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle and get out into the fresh air.
The puddle jumping is one of a number of fun events being held at the park this autumn.
All the park’s rides and attractions are open for half-term and every weekend until November 3, including a new Haunted House attraction which is included in the wristband price.
You can also enjoy everything from pumpkin hunts and spooky crafts to Wicky Bear’s legendary Little Monsters Ball on Saturday October 26.
The park’s annual fireworks extravaganza is also being held on Saturday November 2.
